Gold Coast shack on the market for the first time in 60 years

11 Dowling Drive, Southport was a family home for Marjorie Kukulies, 89, and her late husband Raymond.

Take a trip down memory lane in this original Gold Coast shack built in the 1960s.

Marjorie Kukulies, 89, and her late husband Raymond built the three-bedroom house at Southport where they raised their children Deborah Ebeling and Peter Kukulies.

The couple — Mrs Kukulies was from Brisbane and Mr Kukulies grew up on the Gold Coast — were looking for somewhere to create a family home.

“These estates were pitched to young families,” Mrs Ebeling said.

“Every house had kids so we had a street full of young children to play with growing up.

“It was a very carefree lifestyle.”

There are wooden floors inside the shack.

Mrs Ebeling said she had fond memories playing on Smith St, now a major motorway connecting the M1 to Southport.

“You could go down Smith St on your go-kart,” she said.

“You didn’t have to worry about traffic, it was just a gravel road.

“We used to go and roam around in that general area.”

Smith St, and now the Smith Street Motorway, was a popular place for the children to play.

One thing slowing Qld migration boom

The family’s house at 11 Dowling St features polished floorboards and an open layout with three bedrooms and a bathroom complete with a pink bath.

“My father must have had some influence in the build because of the hardwood timber floors,” she said.

“He was a carpenter by trade.”

There is even a Hills hoist clothesline in the backyard.

The backyard was a favourite spot for Mrs Ebeling, who said her parents were avid gardeners.

“My father had beautiful orchids and mum was very focused on her plants and her gardens.

“It once blossomed in that backyard.”

Despite hosting a lifetime of memories, Mrs Ebeling said the time had come to sell the property.

“Mum is 89 and she moved into aged care this year,” she said.

“It’s a bit hard to let it go, it’s very bittersweet as it’s got all of our history there but we have to move on.”

The 675s sqm block has a huge grassed area.

Marketed as a “hidden gem” and “blank canvas”, the property is set to go to auction on August 19 through Gerogia Tritton of Harcourts Coastal.

“Boasting a rare 675 sqm block in a prime location, it presents a perfect canvas for renovation or development. Positioned in a highly convenient pocket,” the listing states.

“The immense potential of this property is evident, with the possibility to build a second dwelling or develop duplexes subject to council approval, making it a dream prospect for investors and visionaries alike.”

Proptrack data reveals Southport’s median house price is $907,500.
