A local family has splashed $8.7 million to secure both luxury apartments within a boutique beachside build in Tugun, a day ahead of the scheduled auction for one of the villas.
The 30 O’Connor St project by Hickey Lawyers owner-partner, Dan Marino, and his wife, Stephanie, was recently completed by Hutchinson Builders, with the ground-floor villa marketed by Harcourts Coastal agent Ed Cherry.
Designed by BDA architects, the contemporary three-storey building comprised two whole-floor dwellings, each with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, private pool, and large balcony entertaining area with barbecue kitchen.

Mr Cherry said the Saturday auction was called off after the Currumbin-based buyer, whose identity was not disclosed, offered to buy the whole building on a 455sq m site just steps from the sea on the idyllic southern Gold Coast stretch.
“Although we only marketed the one villa for auction, we had multiple groups trying to purchase the entire complex because they saw the marriage value in acquiring both brand-new, architecturally designed dwellings on a larger-than-average block in the sought-after coastal hamlet of Tugun,” Mr Cherry said.

The buyer was one of two parties pushing contracts for both dwellings, with Mr Marino accepting an unconditional offer made under auction terms.
The sale price equated to $18,000 per square metre — a record for apartments in the area, Mr Cherry said.
It’s the second Tugun project for Mr and Mrs Marino, who developed eight top-shelf apartments called Lusso right next door in 2021.

Mr Marino said they retained the Lusso penthouse as a weekender and wanted to ensure its spectacular coastal view corridors would not be built out.
“I kept [30 O’Connor St] low — I wanted to look all the way down to Cooly,” he said.
“We just love Tugun. It’s such a beautiful village feel, so yesterday.
“We really just wanted to finish off that pocket at the start of O’Connor St so that the two buildings together make a great statement heading into the beachside village.”
Mr Marino acquired the two adjacent development sites with 30m of frontage overlooking Tugun Beach for $2.5m in 2020.
