13 Edward Pl, Knockrow has sold
Retired stockbroker Neville Miles and his artist wife Beryl have sold their Byron Bay hinterland estate for $6.8 million.
It was the richest sale of the week reported to realestate.com.au across the Gold Coast and northern NSW regions.
The 60.7ha property at 13 Edward Pl, Knockrow comprised a unique three-bedroom, four-bathroom house built from reclaimed timber, along with 3,000 macadamia trees.
Marketing agent Ku Darroch, of Byron Bay Property sales, said the Melbourne-based buyers would retain their primary residence interstate.

“Their comments were this was the house that fitted into its environment better than any other property they had seen,” Mr Darroch said.
He said the buyers were further enticed by the home’s breathtaking hinterland and ocean views, and noted the sale price agreed to following negotiation represented “good buying” for the new owners.
“It is where the market is at now,” Mr Darroch said.
The estate was one of two lots owned by the Miles, which together were known as Ballyshaw Farm and hosted a commercial macadamia farm with a further 18,000 trees and a cottage across a total parcel of 129ha.

Both lots were originally listed with a price tag of just under $16m by another agent in September 2022, with the option for a buyer to purchase in one line or separate the lots.
The main house was built over six years by the Mileses, who drew design inspiration from the converted Surry Hills warehouse they had renovated before relocating from Sydney.
Recyled timber, steel, concrete and stone were used to dramatic effect to create a luxurious property that harmonises with its lush surrounds.
Features include soaring cathedral-style ceilings, expansive windows and sliding glass doors within a vast free-flowing living space.

The living room has a fireplace clad in bush rocks sourced from the property, while there is also an artist’s studio with a fireplace and bar.
Al fresco entertaining is catered to with wide covered decking, while a stainless steel water tank has been re-purposed as a custom plunge pool surrounded by a spiral of reclaimed wooden sleepers.
Mr Darroch said the vendors planned to relocate to Queensland.
“They are a retired couple who built their state-of-the-art dream home, but they are now at the next stage where they want to play golf,” he said.

Mr Miles arrived in Australia from South Africa in 1986 to serve as chief executive of Ord Minnett Securities, then the nation’s biggest brokerage.
He oversaw the float of John Fairfax Holdings, the Seven Network and Kerry Packer’s magazine stables.
