Sovereign Islands: Inside the remarkable resurgence of Gold Coast’s ritziest enclave

The estate is known for its grandiose homes

BARBARA and David Jeynes invested in Sovereign Islands about 25 years ago during the resurgence of the Gold Coast’s ritziest enclave after the recession of the early 1990s.

The semi-retired teachers have sold multiple mansions since then, taking advantage of the area’s remarkable growth as one of the strongest market performers on the Gold Coast since 2003.

“We purchased land and built our first home on Sovereign Islands, then we bought more land purely as an investment when another release opened up, and since then we have bought and sold several times, both as an investment and for us to live,” Mrs Jeynes said.

“There are some beautiful places on the Gold Coast, I will not deny that. But Sovereign seems to have that special allure for us.”

Developed over several decades by Lewis Land Corporation, the gated waterfront estate is connected to Paradise Point by a 30m-high bridge, and renowned for its grandiose homes – several are owned by billionaire businessman, Clive Palmer.

House prices in Paradise Point were up $1.245m over the past 20 years, from a median of $375,000 to $1.55m, with Sovereign Islands claiming most of the suburb’s big-ticket sales.

The Jeynes have listed an ultra-modern 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom pad at 42 The Sovereign Mile, marketed by Zed Real Estate agents, Cameron Edwards and Ben Ada with a $4.7m price tag.

Set over an 807sq m allotment, the luxury home has high ceilings and multiple living and entertaining spaces across two levels.

Features include chandeliers, LED lighting, a games room and bar, and a new commercial-grade kitchen with granite benches and mirrored cabinetry.

Outside is a pool and spa overlooking the canals and a pontoon suitable for mooring a superyacht, while there’s also a three-car basement garage housing the couple’s prized his-and-hers Jaguars.

Property records show the Jeynes have owned 8 palatial residences in the estate, dating from 1997 when they secured a 796sq m plot of land for $264,500.

Their most recent sale was in 2020, of a sleek Jared Poole-designed abode which went for $3.84m.
